Wat een blije gezichtjes toen die hele grote doos binnenkwam!En wat was het een verrassing voor de kinderen dat je niet alleen een piratenschip, maar ook een eng eiland en een cool piratenhuis van deze set kan maken! Toen de doos open ging schrokken we wel een beetje van het dikke instructieboekje, maar die bleek gelukkig voor 2 van de 3 items te zijn. Vol goede moed begonnen zoon (6 jaar) en dochter (10 jaar) met de bouw van het piratenschip. Moeders stond te popelen om te helpen, maar vooralsnog ging het ze heel goed af!Eindelijk mocht ik dan een helpende hand bieden. Wat een details! En wat leuk dat er deuren open en dicht kunnen. De haai was trouwens als eerste in elkaar gezet en daar werd tijdens het bouwen al druk mee gespeeld. De papegaai was ook erg grappig. Toch geniaal dat je met blokjes zulke leuke figuurtjes kunt maken.We hebben er een hele zaterdag over gedaan, maar toen was het schip af.Er ontbrak 1 stukje in zakje 6, maar die hadden we gelukkig nog in de eigen voorraad Lego liggen.Alle vriendjes moesten het natuurlijk komen bekijken en ook op school werd het schip besproken in de kring. Ook dochter vond het een hele leuke set, dus niet alleen leuk voor jongens!Toen was de dag aangebroken om het schip om te bouwen tot schedeleiland. Het uit elkaar halen van het schip begon heel enthousiast, maar bleek toch nog een flinke klus!En het opnieuw gaan bouwen wanneer alle blokjes door elkaar liggen is niet aan te raden. We hebben de blokjes eerst op kleur gesorteerd in verschillende bakjes. Daarna was het soms nog steeds een hele zoektocht naar dat ene stukje, maar wel beter te doen. Zoon miste de zakjes zei hij. Dochter had er geen last van. Het eiland werd het project van zoon, die mijn hulp echt wel nodig had. Wat ik natuurlijk helemaal niet erg vond! De aap zat al snel in elkaar en daar viel al heel wat mee te spelen. Ook de kleine bootjes waren goed in elkaar te zetten door zoon. Het eiland werd enger en enger, helemaal toen bleek dat het doodshoofd kon bewegen. Toen alles eenmaal in elkaar zat (minder werk dan het schip), werd er weer druk gespeeld met de piraten en de schat. Het skeletje is favoriet, maar de piraat met het houten been ook.Op dit moment haalt zoon het eiland weer uit elkaar, iets zuchtend…. want het bouwen is toch een veel leukere klus. Grandioos piratenschip.

A great set for generations. I chose this set as I wanted to get a taste of LEGO again as an adult, one that I would enjoy now, and then my son in a decade. This set feels timeless to me, it brings back memories of the pirate sets I used to play, and as it’s not bound to any specific franchise it should stand the test of time. It’s also great that 3 builds are included with instructions, I haven’t rebuilt it yet, but from the looks the alternatives are very decent as well. The build took a while, but apart from some strange color coding in the instructions, it’s all clear. To top it all off, it came with a “free” VIP add-on pack Pirates and Treasure 40515, so I could pimp up the ship a bit (see pictures).

Love pirates! Cool ship. Complements Barracuda Bay. Only got back into lego after barracuda bay retired and was on the fence between this (since it’s still on shelves) and the aftermarket. Opted to get Barracuda Bay in aftermarket and I love it… Although Barracuda Bay can be built back into the ship, I prefer it in island Form as there’s more of a story happening than just the ship. Thus, I wanted a ship and opted to get this as well. In the end, I getting both, lol. It’s detailed for the size. It looks way better in real life than on the box IMO. Worth the money. Barracuda is the better set, but this is also great for the price, size and piece count… Very nice detail with everything brick built. I didn’t build the shark however, it looks too silly. Brick built sails are interesting too. Not ever bothering with alt builds, although they in itself look great.

Yo Ho Ho. I can’t say how much I appreciate Lego bringing out so many Pirate based builds this year. As I was building these it took me back to my childhood wanting big Lego sets but not being able to afford it, and just having fun playing with the basic pirate mini-figs and letting my imagination do the rest.
The three builds were really enjoyable with enough different techniques and variations that made each one unique. The Pirate ship was the most straight forward as it went through in bag order using most of the parts. The pub was a little less organised with parts spread across every bag, so basically just dump it all out and go searching. Skull island was about in the middle.
The ship is very cool with a lot of fun playable features for kids, the gang plank into the sharks mouth especially had my mini-figs dreading going overboard. Skull Island mouth opening to the treasure cave was a very cool touch and a half-turn keeps it open so your mini-figs can either find the treasure or store their ill gotten gains.
All in I would say these three sets have been the most fun builds I’ve done in a while and in terms of display, I’m super happy as they go along with my Pirates of Barracuda Bay set perfectly.
The photo’s show the 3 sets and I’ve started to do some detail work (some using the extra parts from sets), I especially love the switchable face on the striped shirt pirate as the fearful look lets you have a lot of fun (as you can see from the shark photo).
